It could be said they've ascended to maturity yet, in many ways, Ed Banger remains gleefully youthful, holding to the spirit of the party - a stable of DJ-producers with a huge sense of fun and old-fashioned loyalty to each other and their fans criss-crossing the world. The imprint's illustrious history and adventures have been documented in a new photographic book by label designer So Me called 'Travaile. Famille. Party' - Work. Family. Party. As Pedro explains "After managing Daft Punk between 1996 and 2008 I wanted to create my own history. By creating Ed Banger records I launched my own musical adventure in a way. I learnt so much with Daft Punk, I owe them a lot. Celebrating this 10th anniversary is very emotional, I'm proud I managed to write a pretty nice musical chapter in my life. Daft Punk as chapter #1 and Ed Banger records as chapter #2 is pretty cool." Ed Banger hasn't put a full compilation out since 'Vol.III' in 2008 and the time is ripe. All their artists contribute exclusive tracks, from long-standing label figureheads Justice, who soon release their own live album, to new disco-house kid on the block, Boston Bun. Over the years, Ed Banger has released music by everyone from Rick Rubin to LFO to, recently, Laurent Garnier, and the new collection represents such diverse thinking. The Balearic android cocktail-disco slowie 'The Beach' by Breakbot sits easily with DSL's sleaze-funk electro throbber 'In Your House', and there's plenty more, from Mr Oizo, Feadz, Cassius, SebastiAn, Krazy Baldhead, Mr Flap

Artist: eduardo de la calle Title: precursors ep |
Cat.No. cadenza87 Label: CADENZA.Format: EXCL12"C |
€ 7.39 | |
| UPC: 827170498662 Release : 17.06.2013 Tracklist 12”: A. Pink Water B1. Madhusudhana B2. The Sneak Cadenza is always committed to bringing new artists and more abstract dance sounds to the forefront, and Eduardo De La Calle's Cadenza debut is a terrific example of the forward thinking, musical vision of the label. Having released a steady stream of vinyl 12”s on his Analog Solutions label, the Spanish DJ and producer flexes his other-worldy electronics on Luciano's ten year old imprint. .Pink Water' takes a minimal groove and splashes analog drops over a searing synth background, its melancholic melodies snaking in and around the joyous spring reverb FX of the machines, creating a very unique and commanding track. On the B side, .Madhusudhana' is built upon a feint jazz funk loop, with shuffling hats and breathy atmospherics working off the heavy oscillations, coming over like a long lost Planet E release. Third track, .The Sneak', continues the .Precursors' theme of .machine music', a rubbery beat welcomes in the trippy and psychedelic synth work, a delicate melody plays behind a heavy, groaning wave, pinging against the reverberating hits, providing another memorable and abstract track. | ||||

Cat.No. strike144 Label: SHITKATAPULT.Format: EXCL12"E |
€ 7.39 | |
| ES GIBT SCHLIMMERES grooves without any drum beat in the original version, whereas the MAP.ACHE remix comes along as a deep house track of the finest kind. With their down-to-earth attitude the producers from Leipzig and core of the upcoming KANN label have been friends of Shitkatapult for long. Feeling deep. The original version also marks the opening of the Berliner FENIN’s album. Moving between a pure Dub/Techno style and a wider sound: House, Ambient, Dub, Music, Soul, all combined in this short opener already. RECEIVER on the B-Side is the biggie on the album and appears in the original version as well as with POLY’s wonderful vocals, carried by a warm soul beat. This jewel is remixed by Seattle/Detroit houseproducer OSBORNE (Ghostly) and develops into a grooving jack beat. Cool Oldschool Djay. Cat.No. crm113 Label: CROSSTOWN REBELS.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | ||
| Crosstown continue their run of killer singles in 2013 with the Russ Yallop’s eagerly anticipated single ‘The Journey’. Russ has been steadily honing his craft since his first killer release on Crosstown Rebels in 2010 ‘I Can’t Wait’. Back on home label turf, the London-based producer is about to unleash ‘The Journey feat. Aimee Sophia’ including a pair of storming remixes by man of the moment Huxley. A warped ride for the senses, ‘The Journey’ is a wave of filthy house, eerie chords, heavy sub bass and those hauntingly falsetto vocals. The overall effect is darkly addictive and B-side ‘How I Feel’ feat. Belle retains the same spacious bass heavy mood with more bounce in the bass-line. A world class and in-demand DJ, Russ Yallop is recently back from the 10 years of Crosstown Rebels Rebel Rave tour that took in the most vibrant destinations of the world.A solid line in dance-floor hits on labels Hot Creations/Hot Waves, Rebellion, no.19 and Losing Suki, Russ Yallop has also released music under the alias B&B on Foot and Mouth. Huxley aka Michael Dodman is the unstoppable producer with the garage roots and immaculate track record on labels such as Hypercolour and Tsuba. His debut on Crosstown - two takes on ‘The Journey’ are both more vigorous club work-outs. The Vocal Mix has added bleeps and a more pumping garage groove while the Dub is the beast with the techier edge. | ||||

Artist: mathew johnson Title: her blurry pictures |
Cat.No. crmlp023 Label: CROSSTOWN REBELS.Format: UK3LP |
€ 16.99 | |
| For many the ultimate visionary and sonic wizard, Mathew Jonson delivers a rare solo album for Crosstown Rebels with ‘Her Blurry Pictures’, encompassing a new evolution in his rhythmically complex and timeless approach over eight fluid and rich compositions. Although distinctive as Jonson's production style, ‘Her Blurry Pictures’ marks the end of a phase for the Canadian in which he used music as a tool of escapism and looking within. Predominantly made in his studio in Berlin in 2012. Her Blurry Pictures’ maps his coming into focus, moving into a new chapter of reflection, remaining present and finding a deeper connection. Rising to prominence over a decade ago, Mathew Jonson has cast shadows on others in his field through a distinctive voice that offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality, spanning elegant electronica, emotive techno and the universal laws of house. Jonson is one of the most well respected names in electronic music with past releases on M_NUS, Perlon and his own Wagon Repair label. His first output in three years, the album follows two solo singles on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels imprint in 2012 Jonson has recently focused on his Cobblestone Jazz outfit as well as Midnight Operator a raw, rough, up-tempo partnership focusing on dance floor bombs), each of which have earned him widespread success. This solo album is a true return to his roots with aplomb! | ||||

Gibson first emerged on Jeff Mills’ experimental, influential 6277 sublabel but then again vanished into the ether; he only reappeared three years later on Perc Trax, even more surprisingly with a full-length. Since then, he’s gone on to steadily more notice with Perc’s imprint, Sect Records, and most recently M_Rec LTD in spite of the continuing lack of information. Exposure isn’t the most important thing for us at Chronicle though, and after hearing these five tracks, we saw exactly what it is that drew Mills to him from the beginning. It is a sound that we find a perfect fit for the techno futurism of our Chronicle series, and here we offer a platform for Gibson’s more sci-fi, ethereal sounding material, exclusively on vinyl for the fifth edition of our sublabel. It commences mysteriously with the big room drones of Almaz, which clearly references the work of the Detroit pioneer who initially brought him to notice. The textures of the keys slowly morph as they’re interrupted by garbled static pulses, and the tension builds steadily over the duration as the atmospheres become thicker and stark, minimalist techno drums make their entrance to develop alongside the rest. After the opener takes a quiet bow, Cemlins continues mood he has built in a static-laden soundscape of gently shifting rhythm and held tones which move steadily upward to a rousing finale. The second side opens more succinctly in techno territory with Vapour, but it again takes a lighter hand with bell-like tones floating over the rest. Here, the feeling remains optimistic rather than ominous, but he quickly shifts back for Miasma, a subtly uneasy techno track full of unbridled intent. Rhythmic static and low-mixed, funky bass move in a deliberate pace with the delicately developed drum programs. Finally, the almost-vocal sound of the haunting lead in Convey brings this mini-album to its quietly emotional conclusion. While unquestionably subdued compared to the work of many of his contemporaries, Ben Gibson’s music accomplishes expressiveness in its delicacy that is rare in modern techno. As such, it stands in the company of few but in perfect counterpoint with the rest, and as an exciting outlier and addition to Chonicle’s explorations.

Artist: metropolis Title: a machine of desire |
Cat.No. seq007 Label: SEQUENCIAS.Format: US12 |
€ 9.99 | |
| Nick Lapien's debut release as Metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. A skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. That initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. This, his second release as Metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. The titular track on the A side is a deep, psychedelic groover. Melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by Lapien with optimum restraint. Equally pensive and gorgeous, The Flood serves as a Machine's beat-less foil on the reverse. Made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of Jean Michel Jarre's more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. Expect to hear more from Lapien here at Sequencias. He has many more dark corners left unexplored. | ||||

Artist: dosem Title: atica |
Cat.No. phc016 Label: HALO CYAN.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | |
| Halocyan Records is proud to team up with rising star Dosem (of labels such as Tronic, Intec, Suara and Bedrock) for its penultimate summer release, 'Atica'. This single is expertly trimmed to optimally loud 45-RPM perfection, a lean and muscular dancefloor bomb primed to take the world by storm. Its two tracks embody the Catalonian producer's thoroughly singular sound which has caught the attention of contemporary dance luminaries such as Sasha, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Joris Voorn, Christian Smith, and Laurent Garnier. Title track “Atica” is the main attraction, a technicolor anthem encompassing all the best elements of Marc Dosem's forward thinking and inspirational “soul-techno and hi-tech funk”. Comprised of a handful of sounds employed with expert timing and finesse, this track's undeniably huge bassline and gliding beat follow a fist-pumping path of total elevation, helped along by ecstatic synths and crucial horn stabs. “Atica” embodies irresistible, timeless, and original dance music, imbued with the futuristic and progressive hallmarks that are Dosem's signature. Following a more experimental trajectory, B-side “Multipass” is all infectious, steamy rhythm laced with bursts of ultraviolet soundscapes and subtle builds / releases. Whereas “Atica” screams of peak-time celebration, “Multipass” squirms and wriggles through the darkness, another formidable weapon primed for the late night. | ||||

Cat.No. alt09 Label: ALTER.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | ||
| Since his previous release for Alter (2010’s “A Romance Of 2 Planets” EP) Jamal Moss has hit a confident stride with his Hieroglyphic Being project and received a wider appreciation and acceptance of his work. In the last year he has partaken in a key performance at Unsound Festival, a random gig for the Wire magazine at the Royal Albert Hall, introduced Sun Ra’s Arkestra live onstage at the Barbican, made mixes for Soul Jazz, FACT and the Quietus and collaborated with newcomers like Ital and Holly Herndon. As a result it’s fair to say that interest in his work has broadened beyond the crate-digging, dance-loving freaks that have been following his output from the early days of his Mathematics label and word about his incendiary collage-style DJ sets has spread thanks to a Boiler Room set that confused the hell out of slightly more “conservative” viewers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF0fbiBLieI. ‘The Electronic Belt’ is his second release for Alter, and perhaps his most dancefloor orientated release for a good while. The EP is made up of three choice cuts from last years “Man With The Red Drum” transmission with each track bearing the signifiers of Jamal’s rough and distinctive production; melodies twisting themselves into psychedelic wormholes, raw kicks and toms that hit as hard and tight as walnuts. Yellow vinyl edition in 5 different coloured disco bags, mastered for vinyl by Stephen Bishop (Basic House / Opal Tapes). | ||||
| Artist: lustmord Title: the word as power |
Cat.No. blackestlp004 Label: BLACKEST EVER BLACK.Format: UK2LP |
€ 16.89 | ||
| The alias of Welsh-born, California-based Brian Williams, Lustmord first emerged as an associate of SPK in the early ‘80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as Heresy (1990), The Place Where The Black Stars Hang (1994) and (with Robert Rich) Stalker (1995). Lustmord has also contributed to numerous Hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of Clock DVA, Chris & Cosey, Geir Jenssen, The Melvins, Tool, Aaron Turner, Monte Cazazza and Coil’s Jhon Balance. Often seen to epitomize “dark ambient”, it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. Half a decade in the making, The Word As Power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma. For the first time in his 33-year career Lustmord places vocals at the centre of his abyssal ambient creations, coaxing incantatory performances out of Aina Skinnes Olsen, Jarboe (ex-Swans), Maynard James Keenan (Tool) and Soriah. Those looking to properly decode the subject matter of the album are advised to study Simon Fowler’s fiendishly elaborate, double-spread cover illustration. Suffice it to say here that it concerns "the word" as written - signs, ciphers, symbology, semantics, etymology - and as spoken - myths, mantras, chants, invocation and evocation. Of course it’s also about the unwritten, the unspoken; that which exists beyond the reach of language. Sonically, The Word As Power is even more detailed, expansive and consuming than Lustmord’s followers have come to expect, with voices, electronics, immense sub-bass, field recordings and other acoustic phenomena harnessed and arranged to stimulate feelings of dread and desolation, certainly, but also escape, renewal and rebirth. | ||||

Artist: interplanetary prophets Title: zero hour |
Cat.No. ziq341 Label: PLANET MU.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | |
| After their collaboration at last year’s Unsound festival, there were rumours about a recorded EP from Interplanetary Prophets a.k.a. Jamal Moss (Hieroglyphic Being) and Daniel Martin Mccormick (Ital). The good news is they were true. These tracks are the fruits of studio jams earlier this year, edited down into three long, dense pieces. And the coupling really works; Interplanetary Prophets feels and sounds like a brand new entity. Burning Chrome opens, stretching effects and warm, filtered chords over popping drums, designed for deep space voyaging. Zero Hour manages to mirror the intention and seriousness of post-punk electronic bands such as Ike Yard or Monoton, Jamal’s deadpan voice dropping incantions over a stark, hypnotising beat, and whooshing atmosphere. The closer, Running out of Time is beatless, and cosmic. Held together with pulsing bass and quiet breathing, notes flicker like burning embers, occasionally shaped by slabs of synth.These are tracks that mirror their creators, carving techno into new shapes with a nod to the past and a foot in the future. Cat.No. tec072 Label: TECTONIC.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | |
| Hot on the tails of his much discussed contribution to the latest edition of Tectonic Plates Volume 4, 'Talk', and following up from his debut EP on Tectonic last Autumn, the eponymously titled 'DECiBEL EP', Jay Fotaine, aka DECiBEL, comes correct with a powerhouse duo of techno-infused 140bpm cuts. 'Whirl' takes a giddying tone from the offset as it's fast, percussive drum machine hits build pace to militant and forceful effect - like a turbo-charged, mid-90s Richie Hawton cut, re-imagined by fresh ears. Woozy snare rolls crash in over the weighted subs, instantly lighting the dance floor on fire upon impact. Flip then for 'Poke', which retains the techno-retro themes of 'Whirl', layering up the percussive parts to dramatic effect as acid lines flit and flirt around them. The heat rises and builds, then drops to nothing for a brief, deceptive moment - crashing in again with off-kilter momentum. Both sides are wonky, woozy techno cuts at the 140bpm dubstep tempo - bursting with strange energy. TRACK LIST: 1. Whirl 2. Poke | ||||

Artist: ikonika Title: beach mode |
Cat.No. hdb074 Label: HYPERDUB.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | |
| ‘Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)’ is the perfect snapshot of Ikonika's new album 'Aerotropolis'. It's also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of “One To Watch”, Jessy Lanza. ‘Beach Mode’ combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the ‘80s, with Jessy's vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths. It's a refreshingly straight forward and sensual piece of pop dance. Side B starts with a dub mix for all the vocal haters, while the ‘Percapella’ version breaks it down into a syncopated drum track and a slightly dubbed take on the vocals, giving it a tracky and colder toughness reminiscent of early Chicago house music. Get into Beach Mode. | ||||

| Mark's classic 'Shooting Stars' was originally released on the late great 'Offshoot' label in 1998 and became an underground hit, seeing support from a variety of DJ's including Derrick May, Cajmere and of course, Ben Sims. Fast forward 15 years and this uncompromising tough edged disco workout still gets dropped and is highly sought after on the second hand vinyl market, so we thought it was time for a respectful remix package. First up is a brand new firing makeover from the man himself that jacks in all the right places while staying true to original groove, then label head honcho Ben Sims who drops an intense Lil Louis inspired reworking. Uk hero Aubrey gets Dark on us with an intricate and menacing remix while newly formed Fokus Group (aka Paul Mac & Ben Sims) pull no punches with a relentless and harsh interpretation (Vinyl Only). | ||||

| The curatorial direction Appleblim has always chosen to take with Apple Pips is rooted in his DJ sets, testing tracks to the nth degree and searching for those cuts which engender the desired emotional response in the club. Arkist’s 2011 banger Rendezvous held plenty of that weight in its original form, and it wasn’t long before Scuba wanted to get his hands on the parts for a more houseminded revision in line with his SCB output. Kept as a secret weapon of ‘Blims ever since it was first crafted, Scuba’s DJ Kicks mix in 2012 finally brought about a public airing of his own edit. With the dust settled on that particular chapter, it’s only fitting that this rock solid interpretation receives a full vinyl release over which the eight minutes of poised keys, unflinching bass and swelling atmospherics can prowl undisturbed. For the flip, we’re let in on a particularly enlightening update that takes the temperature of Scuba’s SCB productions at this moment in time. His 2013 Dub adopts a darker tone, slowly growing into a taut monster of submerged techno. After the audacious ripples of snare drum that make up the breakdown, the full meat of the track is revealed in a blur of acidic intensity, giving way to abandon where before there had only been the suggestion of it. Honed for the club and thoroughly road tested, these remixes plunge Arkist’s production into wholly new territory while highlighting Scuba’s considerable instinct for hypnotic, enveloping floor tackle that can fit a cavernous rave as much as a sweaty basement. Plays and support coming from Carl Craig, Will Saul | ||||

| Forward Strategy Group, one of Perc Trax’s central acts return with their first EP since their debut album ‘Labour Division’ was released in May of last year. Since then they have gigged around Europe including gigs at Berlin’s two temples of techno, Berghain and Tresor and have had their album tracks remixed by UK industrial/synth fusionists Factory Floor and Perc Trax’s man in Athens, Sawf. Continuing the expansion of their sound first heard on ‘Labour Division’ the EP opens with ‘We’re Looking For Manpower’, one of their most melodic tracks to date based around floating chord sequences and a momentum heavy, clap driven groove. Next ‘Clean Neckline’ toys with broken beats and grinding machine noise, somehow distorted & saturated in sound whilst also clean and crisp. Finally the epic ‘Code #3’ continues the sound of Code #1 and #2 from their debut Perc Trax EP with a rock solid 4/4 kick, a snare that could floor a toddler from 50 paces and a host of rattling percussion patterns providing all the rhythmic interest you could desire. | ||||

€ 7.89 | |
| Next up on Light Sounds Dark, we have some tracks hailing from 2006-2008 from the cosmic Mutant Beat Dance, we thought it best to let them tell us about their music so here they go: Protagonist: Protagonist paces itself like a churning liquid seeping from the cracks of broken Chicago concrete streets.Riddled with scum and icy sludge, the movement of the track feels like it might be a sailor with spiritous substances flowing through his veins, but somehow maintains it's wasted momentum through it's sliding wormy sequences. Capitulo Finale: Wavey disjointed synths mesh with chaotic dueling vocals. Univox rhythms beat your brain into a soupy pulp, and your body into a pile of ooze. Off kilter and strictly for the mind numbed freaks. The Final Chapter... LowLife: Fragmented shards of a broken mirror, represented by a loosely hand played arpeggiator, reflect rays of cosmic pads intertwining the strains of the fabric. Remote vocal artefacts break the eery tension while various rhythms build and break the progression of the track. The Fight: Pop structures squeeze between mutated basslines and a steady rhythms, while distant voices loosely croon in a thin air of tension and imbalance where more depravity lurks. A mutilated brain trying to regain consciousness from the confusion of a distant memory. | ||||

€ 7.99 | |
| After the joyful mess caused by « Brandy » on adventurous dancefloors, Qoso goes deeperwith three subwoofer-friendly tracks mixing house, techno, and just enough sonic dirt. « Hard on the boulevard » has proved its efficiency already on some of the sweatiest parisian dancefloors. Solidely grounded on a a slightly saturating bassline, it gets its driving force from a melodic sample fighting to get out of its cutoff filters and will sneaky easily as a peaktime weapon in every DJ bag. It’s as simple a that, really. « Monica » operates in a more stripped-out mood and once again makes a bit of sense of the Levon Vincent comparisons Qoso has been receiving. The track is serious dubbed-out deep house business for the early morning… When the synthpad arrives, it’s this kind of moment in a set when you reflect about having been once again out all night long, and how this is something you want to keep happening in your life. Crossroads » stars the B side with a quite different atmosphere. It’s a suspensfull, grey moment with his hazy pads and snares delays and you’d probably feel a bit lost as a dancer, but soon enough the bass comes in from the dark and brings along an unbelievably smooth techno beat. Lose yourself to it and it will take you elsewhere, guaranteed. Finally, a friend of the label since its beginnings, Perc steps in as a remixer for and takes advantage of our weakness for the wildest parts of club music. His « Crossroads » remix sounds like a crazy update of the Djax Up Beats sound and reminds us a bit of Geeeman’s remix for ow Jack, which isn’t something we would have imagined at first, but we now feel is quite a blessing. | ||||
