Artist: uner Title: palua |
Cat.No. cadenza72 Label: CADENZA.Format: EXCL12"C |
€ 7.39 | |
| Bearing the name as one of the most influential and highly rated electronic artists from the Spanish scene, UNER joins Cadenza for the first time with the two piece ‘Palua’ EP. Clocking up some flawless releases over the last few years on imprints such as Diynamic, 2020 Vision, Get Physical or Defected among others, UNER’s percussion and funk led productions have caught the ears of many and Cadenza proudly welcome him aboard in the opening weeks of 2012. The EP’s A-side ‘Pallene’ marks itself with an insatiably rhythmic appetite. Bongo’s tap, tom drum’s echo and shakers hiss through the opening moments, underpinned by a simple yet provoking piano melody. Winding along at a pitter patter pace, UNER’s live percussion performed alongside Nacho Gonzalez make for an elegant and classic atmosphere. As ‘Pallene’ and its bellowing kick wriggle along sensually through scattered doubled keys, warm synths and shimmering hi-hats, it takes on a dance floor worthy interpretation of classic Latino Glamour. Joined by B-side ‘Cocoua’, the ‘Palua’ EP retains its wriggling sensuality with pounding kicks and high contrasting hats and shakers. Building demurely with a rising bass line that mocks the clattering cymbal crashes, ‘Cocoua’ swings into dusky late night vibes as a melodic chord pattern makes its entrance. Gloriously simple in its stabbing arrangement. ‘Cocoua’ fels hypnotic, timeless and sexy as is the perfect companion for ‘Pallene’. Tracklisting: A1 - Pallene B1 - Cocoua | ||||

Cat.No. cor12093 Label: COCOON.Format: EXCL12"E |
€ 7.39 | |
| Even after more than 30 years of living the lifestyle of electronic dance music, Techno is still sometimes looking for a matching form and sound language to transfer the special thrill of a live event to a club night adequately. So, Sven Väth and his crew were even more excited about the live set of Eric Estornell aka Maetrik at Cocoon's Closing Party at Amnesia / Ibiza this year. For the final of a season that was once again exploring the limits of party culture, Maetrik celebrated an extraordinary energetic state of emergency for more than one hour. The resulting live CD is reflecting that matchless mixture of pumping Deep House, energetic Soul and adrenaline-enriched Noise that Maetrik presented already on such renowned labels from the likes of Treibstoff from Cologne, Dumb Unit and Steve Bug's Audiomatique platform, and which is, with timeless tracks like "Snorkel" and "Crush On Me", also an important part of Cocoon's current label portfolio. The first accompanying 12" features the mind-blowing up-tempo-Techno monster "The Reason" and the programmatic Maetrik-style definition "Particle House" with its breathless House mantra. | ||||

Artist: diego capri & andrea gentile Title: smoker |
Cat.No. mltd009 Label: METROLINE LIMITED.Format: EXCL12"C |
€ 7.39 | |
| Diego Capri and Andrea Gentile, the duo from Rome who brought us the excellent Downhill EP on Metroline LTD (MLTD 002) last summer, return with two more slices of bass-heavy dancefloor-focused minimal techno. Smoker is a mean builder of a track. A tight, solid kick and bass arrangement keeps the fluttering delay-soaked percussion in check. Breathy hisses and swirls give the track its momentum while a neat little two-note melody weaves in and out of the mix to devastating affect. Writers is a dark slab of industrial dub. Machine noises crackle and grind through the track creating intricate rhythms until the lead synth really takes over and drives the track forward while lots of low-end reverb gives the track a sinister, manacing groove. The Agaric remix of Smoker, as you’d expect, takes things in a much more solid techno direction. The bassline gets loosened a few notches, giving the track a real baggy kind of funk. Huge synths cut a path through the dense mix of chopped vocals, claps and reverb-laden snares. It’s the kind of tripped out journey that fans of Skoog’s We Are releases will be waiting for. An intense and constantly evolving tech-funk marathon. Tracklist: A1. Smoker A2. Writer B1. Smoker (Agaric Remix) | ||||
| Artist: mike wall Title: vacuum packed ep |
Cat.No. mltd014 Label: METROLINE LIMITED.Format: EXCL12"C |
€ 7.39 | ||
| More sinister mind-fuckery from Mike Wall on Metroline. His second release on the label comes as a four-track vinyl EP, with an additional four tracks available to download. This bumper pack includes mixes from Franco Cinelli, James Venturi and Karel Jadransky. The title track, Vacuum Packed, is a subaqueous bass monster punctuated by whipcrack claps and ominous synth stabs. The rumble of the bass and kicks is so intense that all it takes is one, perfectly placed sample to break the tension. Who ever thought you could use a clap to clean your brain? Franco Cinelli’s remix of Vacuum Packed is a stripped down, simplified variation on the theme. Where the original relies on reverb-heavy percussion to cut through the mix, Cinelli uses good old fashioned motor city pads to build an atmosphere before letting fly with a gorgeous percussion groove. This track sits comfortably in the middle ground between Vince Watson and Audion. And just because you’ll be left wanting more, Cinelli has provided a bonus tripmix, building on the theme, which is available to download along with the release. Los Pagos demonstrates Mike signatures mix of both fragile and robust rhythmical elements. A loose, growling bassline is kept under control by metronomic hats and mechanical claps and snares. Meanwhile percussion rolls, and fizzes around the main body of the track, giving it a rich and detailed texture. The Elon remix of Los Pagos is, in many ways the opposite A gargantuan bassline and solid kicks underpin a whirlwind of samples, percussion that expands from simple, pounding tribal rhythm into a cerebellum-melting brew. Tracklist: A1. Vacuum Packed A2. Vacuum Packed (Franco Cinelli Remix) B1. Los Pagos B2. Los Pagos (Elon Remix) | ||||

Artist: dani casarano & felipe valenzuela Title: never die ep |
Cat.No. mltd017 Label: METROLINE LIMITED.Format: EXCL12"C |
€ 7.39 | |
| We love a bass monster, and between them Dani Casarano and Felipe Valenzuela have delivered a particularly fierce one in the shape of Never Die. Immense kicks bound and leap through a beautifully deep, rich bassline. Over the top, a whole jungle of exotic insectoid clicks and whirs compete for attention and a beautiful, catchy little synth lines keep things moving forward nicely. A pounding, and truly exhilarating, track. Between Hours dives deeper. The lively, unpredictable percussion is there, but the track really takes its inspiration from the likes of King Britt and Theo Parrish. A simple house piano riff and smooth vocal snatches flow through the mix, creating a smooth, emotional yet driving, techy tune. The Nekes remix of Never Die is a straight jacking blend of simple in-your-face percussion and powerful driving bass rhythm. It's got an energy and a drive that sounds like it might have been hammered out in one furious seven-minute session. Complex breaks cut through now and then - echos of the original's elaborate soundscape weaving in and out of Nekes' powerful, metronomic take. Rounding things off on this EP is the reverb-soaked, shaker-fueled Levantate. Seemingly disparate percussive elements combine to create a coherent, driving rhythm. Motor City pads duck and weave through the mix, with all elements pulling together to give the track an extraordinary momentum and drive. Definitely in the groove Tracklist: A1. Never Die A2. Between Hours B1. Never Die (Nekes Remix) B2. Levantate featuring Jose Elias | ||||

Artist: sonotheque Title: sugar blues ep |
Cat.No. mltd025 Label: METROLINE.Format: UK12 |
€ 7.89 | |
| Metroline Limited catches Sonotheque pimping it. Beautiful, rich synths and brass move right through this EP, bubbling through nice solid house grooves and soulful vocal cuts. 'Sugarblues' is the kind of house cut that technoheads go nuts for, with the loose, fluid structure of Carl Craig, the bump and grind of DJ Sneak and a smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom sax line that runs the length of the track. 'Latex Dreams' is a kinky little number. Amp Fiddler-style keys and a cheeky Temps sample give the track a solid-gold 70s vibe. Shuffling rhythms keep the heads nodding while the bumping bass tones and pumping kicks get the hips shaking. Smooth. Bearweasel flip the script on their rework of 'Sugarblues'. Louisa Page and Dean Muhsin serve up an immense slab of dark, rolling dub. They give the track the full King Tubby treatment - bringing all the faders down and letting the bass breathe. Evil cymbals that invade your brain, percussion that sends your limbs into involuntary spasms, and lush vintage synth pulses to keep you locked in. A serious weapon. Digital only track 'Calor' sees Sonotheque in full techno flow, as hi-tech synths and mutant pads soar over bubbling beats and urgent high-end percussion. | ||||

| Mabaan Soul are back on Metroline Limited with their third release for the label and this time they get the double vinyl/digital treatment too! The talented Italian duo have been causing a stir in the house and techno underground world with their 2009 release on Metroline being charted by Chicago legend Dj Sneak in his best of the year chart! On top of that, another house legend Satoshi Tomiie after hearing their debut New Orleans EP on Metroline Limited, promptly asked the guys to release on his label Saw Recordings! The opening track Joseph is jacking disco groove with an insistent bass hook and infectious lead synth. Summer is nearly here! Frankfurt, is a love song for the original Robert Johnson crew - The good people of Frankfurt who really know what they're dancing to. It's an intense 5am grind that brings driving European warehouse techno together with the deep soulful grooves of Detroit house. Inxec and Matt Tolfrey pump up the midrange on their remix. They pick out a nice groove, and build on it with bright and airy percussion while maintaining the original disorientating shuffle and boomin low end. Funky is definitely back. That rolling bassline keeps you locked in, and those brutal MPC-style percussion loops are would make Marley Marl proud. | ||||

Cat.No. pony21cd Label: PONY REC.Format: EXCL1CDA |

| Crackling Danish melancholy. Made in Brooklyn, New York. A loft near Williamsburg Bridge Dictionaries beat each other; the sound pushes out to the microphone, takes a right turn in to a laptop and becomes an electronically muted bass drum. Speakers against a crooked wall give evidence: The unpredictable duo, Alcoholic Faith Mission, apprentices of dejection, try on a selection of straightjackets for the inspiration that bounces around orthodox Brooklyn to become their second album. Everything used to make the music, must be found within the room. The room and the mission. The critics said sweet things about their debut album ('Misery loves company', 2006), recorded in a bedroom in Copenhagen and fueled by its own sense of desperation, lovingly nurtured by three important dogmas: alcohol, darkness and candlelight. Now, three years later, the duo went into seclusion in a converted factory loft, they return to manifest a re-organization of the dogma inspired by a neon sign screaming Apostolic Faith Mission two years earlier. The raw, winter-y Brooklyn-streets served as the perfect frame for breeze-shooting, brushing on alcoholism, on close family member's wet deroute; the neon sign had purpose. The pending album – 421 Wythe Avenue – has, with the latter stay in Brooklyn, left the duo with a more electronically distorted sound. A sound much inspired by Brooklyn, but also by the alternative Canadian rock scene, and names such as Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, The Most Serene Republic etc. Tracklisting: 01 Theme From Soft Ice Cream Products 02 Gently 03 Nut In Your Eye 04 We All Have Our Shortcomings 05 Escapism 06 Guilty Scared Eyes 07 Painting Animals In Watercolors 08 Someone Else 09 Did You Eat 10 Sweet Evelyn 11 Time | ||||

| How do you call music that switches effortlessly between Manchester guitar sound and smooth club tracks without losing its flow for one second? Which takes its time and yet is absolutely present at any moment? It’s a tightrope walk – but on their second album „Itinerary“ Jersey manage to pull it off with each track. The seeming antagonism of a certain airiness on the one hand and complex arrangements on the other as well as that between density and transparency is abolished within the blink of an eye. And yet, to characterize the sound of the five piece from Berlin as demanding or daring would totally miss the point. Rather, the music of Jersey sounds warm, calm and at times has traces of melancholia. Despite all sophistication, with which the band incorporates sub basses, subliminal computer noises and other elements of club music, Jersey remain essentially a guitar band. This band has no reservations against any musical style – be it electronica or post rock. At times, this music reminds one of that straight and unpretentious guitar music from the nineties, which answered indie rock opulence with strictness and sparseness. But moments like that do not last long – Jersey are not in favour of hypnotic loops trailing of into infinity. Their music rather proves that the band has a certain talent for songwriting – but without ever being fenced in by traditional, „classic“ forms. One example of this is that the singing voice introduces itself very late in a song, almost as if it were another instrument. The warm voice of singer Noel blends in with the over-all sound of the band almost unobtrusively. One is tempted to call it „instrumental music with singing“. Jersey are masters of the grooving mid tempo. And with Norman Nietzsche, they had without a doubt a dab hand at the mixing desk. A prime example for the band’s songwriting qualities is the wonderful “Talking To Myself“, a pop song, which spells its magic from the first second. On the other hand, the comparatively darker track „Shoeshine“ or „Darkline“ with its gloomy melancholia are songs with totally unique qualities. Another unforgettable moment of this album is the appearance of bassist Marion Gerth as lead vocalist on „Noir A.M.“. Jersey are Marion Gerth (ex-Fred is Dead), Andreas Haberl (the Notwist, Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra), Max Punktezahl (the Notwist, contriva), Noel Rademacher (Noël) and Florian Zimmer (Saroos, iso68). | The sound of longing. Long shadows and cool winter wind in Gartnergade, Copenhagen. Sunbleached campus, sealions and the pacific ocean in La Jolla Green Pitch’s new album is the unlikely musical meeting between Copenhagen and Southern California. Between everyday life, dreams and hope. The title is ”La Jolla”. It is an unusually beautiful, inventive and inspired album. Listen to it, and let it unfold in its magnificent, kalejdoscopic, slowmotion beauty. La Jolla is recorded by Ste Rasch who has captured his and his wife Rex Garfields soulful playing in the apartments in Gartnergade, Copenhagen and California with much care. The finished recordings were sent to Cambridge Massachusett, where the master of production Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, The Cure, Pixies) cooperating with the musician Chris Brokoaw (Codein, Thurston Moore, The New Year) mixed them in the most beautiful way. Besides Rex and Ste there is a number of musical friends appearing on the album. The sound is more electric and more experiemental compared to what Green Pitch has presented before. The instrumentation is rich and varied, and the music is hard to pin down. Green Pitch got an international career after the debut album ”Ace of Hearts” was released on the small label Good guy’s recording company in April 2005. In 2007 the album was released in the Us by Funzalo Record and in England and the rest of the world by Rykodisc. | It all started with two cool DIY EP’s, and now – in the summer of 2009 – the band have just grabbed the prestigious ‘Band Of The Year’ award at the Danish Music Critics’ Award show, and in May they did a brief tour of Germany as special guests to Bat For Lashes. In a mix between the gentle and the explosive, alternative/electronic act Marybell Katastrophy has found their niche. It might be electro-pop, but not as we (usually) know it.. Their music is to be found somewhere in the landscape between Johannes Brahms, Pixies and David Bowie. Being quite difficult to describe, critics have compared the sound of Marybell Katastrophy to everything from The Bangles on acid, to Kate Bush turned upside down… (sic!) The debut full-length album - The More – was released in Denmark on 24 November 2008. 15 songs, showing the wonderful, experimenting, playful and distorted world of Marybell Katastrophy. And again the critics loved it. According to major papers Information and Urban, The More was ‘album of the year’ in Denmark. The Danish National Radio nominated Marybell Katastrophy as ‘Experiment Of The Year’, in their ‘P3 Gold’ award show. Marybell is basically a duo, consisting of Marie Højlund (ex. Tiger Tunes) and Emil Thomsen (Schweppenhäuser), but on stage they’re usually aided by 3 – 5 musicians. They have previously toured Germany, France, England and Ireland. And they have played big festivals; Roskilde Festival 2007 and the grand opening show at the Spot Festival (Danish answer to South By Southwest) in June 2007. | Alcoholic Faith Mission, the paradoxically named Danish quintet who flew their second album, 421 Wythe Avenue into worldwide music-blogger praise and record label love in three continents, are looking forward to the spring release of their third album, Let This Be the Last Night We Care. The PonyRec protégés hit stride in 2009 with critical acclaim from the international music press and more adoration from bloggers around the planet. Not only did they make many of the Best of 2009 lists, they’ve got four songs on the soundtrack of a Canadian independent film called, Point Traverse, and were just asked to play a variety of gigs and festivals in the US. With the ink drying on a two-album deal for a Tokyo label Quince Records, and the upcoming PonyRec/Paper Garden Records release of 421 Wythe Avenue in the States, one could say things look promising for these pleasingly discordant Danes. “On the other hand,” says Thorben Seiero, the band’s front man and co-founder, “with the success of 421, this album’s got a hell of a lot to live up to.” Tracklisting: Put The Virus In You My Eyes To See Closer To Dallas Got Love? Artist: public lover Title: a broken shape of you |
Cat.No. song07cd Label: THESONGSAYS.Format: EXCL1CDA |
€ 15.89 | |
| Public Lover's debut album, A Broken Shape Of You, shows Bruno Pronsato and Ninca Leece doing what they do best: electronic avant-pop with a playful touch of romance. The album comes third in their short catalogue, after last fall's Musique D'Hiver Pour L' Été, released on Pronsato's label, thesongsays, and Naked Figures, a more upbeat but equally elegant effort for Telegraph. Both records revealed Public Lover to be something rather fresh: an electronic duo that has both production savvy and lyrical finesse. With A Broken Shape Of You, this budding dynamic reaches maturity, creating what is surely one of the best albums of the year. There are two sides to Public Lover--the indie group and the production duo--and the tension between these two gives the album its momentum. At times it's driven by Ninca Leece's singing. The title track sets the scene with a string of potent images: "cold sunshine," "frosted window pane," "shadows of you and I." On "Under Your Tongue," she keeps us guessing with ambiguous metaphors: "It's something, to keep under your tongue, it's something, between your teeth." "I Try," one of the duo's best songs and the only previously released one here, strikes the album's most melancholy note, with those simple two words speaking volumes as they repeat. "Your Eyes Taste Like Mine" follows a similar blueprint: the oblique title phrase becomes more meaningful and more mysterious as the song floats on. At other times the album's pop element subsides, letting its unique production take the fore. From the first note of the opening song--a distant, quivering minor chord--it's clear the album's aural palette is something truly inspired. Pronsato has always earned accolades for his impeccable sound design, but his key strengths are in texture and rhythm; Ninca Leece, a trained vocalist and indie artist at heart, fills in the gaps with her ear for warmth and melody. Dusty piano keys bounce off polished kick drums, surreal vocal lines float above imperfect hand claps, and room noise and vocal outtakes (two of Pronsato's trademarks) give the mix a sonorous dimension. Delivered in hues of pale winter light, the album has a wispy, almost weightless feel--something thanks in part to Steffen Betke, better known as Pole, the esteemed dub techno artist, who mastered the album. A Broken Shape of You is something many electronic albums are not: understated, elliptical, and most importantly, personal. | ||||

| Shambhu the undisputed Queen of the Berghain bar ladies (she regulary holds court every Saturday upstairs at her very own Gitter Bar) and Rummelsnuff the Germanic Hulk of the Berghain/Laboratory bouncers come up with enchanting and surprising results. The release comes pressed as a 7" (a first for the label and limited to 500 hand-numered copies) and each side is given to one of the two artists. Recording sort of cover versions that developed more into original tracks inspired by releases from Ostgut Ton's back catalogue, Shambhu And The True Love Hearts got their teeth into Steffi's "Sadness" and created a new version full of grit and raw power steeped into Gospel, Rock & Roll, Blues and Soul, the vocals of Shambhu are quite incredible, which she also proved live at her band's recent concert at Berghain. Rummelsnuff has been recording his unique brand of Industrial Music meets Drinking Songs for quite some time now and many are already familiar with his sound, for this 7" he has taken the track "Makes Me Wanna Dance" by Prosumer & Murat Tepeli and created a German version in true Rummelsnuff style, linear teutonic beats push the track straight through and the repetitive chorus creates a further link to the Techno side | ||||

| Phil is welcoming the new year w/ three collectors item tracks by Klovn - the studio partners of Trentemoller & one half of the most successful Danish electronic live act 'Lulu Rouge' Cover up is a tough club track which drifts to a subtle, 'less is more' principle, where PF blends the organic sounds into the dreamy electronics but yet qualifies as a very functional opening anthem. Melvins Beats rounds the release off with it's cinematic & shoe-gaze approach. Yet another, meticulously composed release from this label with an idealist character, a must have! | ||||
